Come and visit the Peace River Wildlife Center

The Peace River Wildlife Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the care, preservation and protection of Charlotte County's native wildlife.

Animals (mammals, birds and reptiles) that have been orphaned, displaced or injured are brought to the Center. Our total patient intake for 2009 was 1,395; our annual totals have increased every year. Last month we took in 26 birds, 26 mammals and 6 reptiles for care and treatment. Most of our "patients" are rehabilitated and later released back to their natural habitats.

For those animals whose injuries are too extensive, the PRWC becomes their permanent home. At present, we have approximately 120 residents. Occasionally the Center collaborates with other Florida exhibits to exchange permanently injured for optimal care and public viewing.

With the exception of a few paid positions, we are staffed entirely by volunteers. We do not receive any government funding.

We welcome this opportunity to share with you information about the Peace River Wildlife Center -- a little of what we do and how you can help out, too. To find out more, make a selection from the links on the top of this page.

Business Hours

The Center's office is open everyday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tours are offered from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. when we are open to the public. There are no tours on holidays. Wildlife needing attention is received seven days a week. Located by the front gate is a secured receptacle for an after-hours drop-off.

Services

Rehabilitation & Intensive Care Facility

Much of what is done at the PRWC takes place "behind the scenes" in our intensive care area. Here, animals that have been injured are brought in, medically evaluated and treated. Their successful rehabilitation depends, in part, on solitude and quiet. Hence, this area is off limits to the public.

Educational Programs

Over the years, the center has developed a series of informative and entertaining presentations. Area clubs, organizations and schools interested in learning more about and becoming better acquainted with our native wildlife commonly request volunteers from the center to speak to their members and students.

Gift Shop

Our gift shop is a vital part of our mission. Nesteld between the exit gate and the pelican sanctuaty, you can find everything from bird houses and jewelry to educational materials. Click here for more information.

Newsletter

Our quarterly newsletter is "The Peace River Tracks." It keeps PRWC members up to date with "resident" happenings, current events, fund-raising efforts and future plans. To download our newsletter, click here.

Tours

Whether you're visiting for the first, second or tenth time, there's always something new to behold in the grace of the animals who now reside permanently at the center. If you'd like a guided tour, they're given regularly throughout the day. If you would prefer to walk through at your leisure, a volunteer will get you started and remain accessible to answer questions you may have. Self-guided tour brochures are available with information on our ever-changing resident population.
